Caring for Pearls

Caring for Pearls

Pearls, unlike other gemstones, are products of living organisms. They are beautiful but delicate and special care must be taken to ensure their beauty is preserved for years to come.

Pearls are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Store them in a cool dry place and away from direct sunlight.Pearls are prone to scratches from sharp objects. Store pearls separately from other jewelry which may damage them.

Pearls strands must be strung with a knotting in between the pearls to prevent abrasive rubbing of pearls against each other. If the pearl strand is in constant use, retread every year.

Do not even try to clean pearls by putting them in any chemical solvent. Acid, in particular, can destroy (dissolve) a pearl in no time. If you must, use distilled water.

Avoid spraying perfume directly onto pearls. Constant contact with perfume or other chemicals will tarnish the lustre of pearls. Human sweat too can affect the lustre of pearls. Wipe pearls with a soft cloth after use.
